In the light of an economically and ecologically necessary as well as politically and publicly pursued energy transition, new technologies for energy production and carbon dioxide containment are becoming established. Conflict-free commodities are indispensable for the technical implementation of the energy transition.

At the same time, commodities extraction is often associated with unstable and conflict-ridden countries of origin, which is why regulatory measures are increasingly restricting the import of these commodities. However, the implementation of the regulations has a challenging effect on the local population, which is dependent on ASM (Artisanal Small-Scale Mining). The implementation affects investments and hinders the sustainable extraction of critical commodities and their access to the market. This leads to the migration of the ASM sector into uncontrolled overexploitation.

IotaOrigin UG addresses the mentioned economic and socially relevant issues. These include the extraction of commodities in a way that is in accordance with human rights and environmentally compatible, in compliance with the OECD Due Diligence Guidelines and the international regulations based on them. The aim is to ensure that the energy transition is ethically responsible and, at the same time, to fulfil the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) of the UN by supporting the local population.

FAQs

The number of people employed in artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) has tripled since 1993 to about 45 million. In addition, there are between 60 and 150 million people who depend indirectly on the income of the ASM sector. For example, in the gold sector, about 90% of the employed people are in the ASM sector and contribute 20% of the annual global gold production. The informal ASM sector could contribute to the fulfilment of the SDGs through further formalisation.

Formalizing the currently informal ASM sector can also contribute to the achievement of the following goals: decent work and sustainable economic growth, health and well-being, partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, protecting life under water and life on land, and gender equality.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consist of 17 goals for the development of a sustainable future. The SDGs were established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 and are to be achieved by 2030. According to UNDP, the ASM sector can contribute significantly to achieving the goals. This includes contributing to poverty reduction, education, sustainable cities and communities, renewable energy, innovation and infrastructure.

Critical commodities are defined as those commodities that are indispensable for sustainable progress and the development of future technologies. They are economically and strategically important, but their procurement is not reliable and unhindered. The EU publishes a report every three years which currently lists 30 critical commodities that are partly or mainly extracted by the ASM sector.

According to the OECD, conflict commodities can lead to the outbreak of conflicts, promote or prolong them. As a result, the rule of law of sovereign states is undermined, peace is jeopardised and violations of human rights are committed. Especially in high-risk areas with weak state institutions, conflict commodities can threaten the existing fragile stability. Therefore, the OECD has published due diligence guidelines to be complied with when sourcing the commodities tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold (also known as 3TG) from high-risk areas. Based on the OECD Guidelines adopted by the international community, the EU Conflict Minerals Act and the American Dodd-Frank Act (Sec. 1502) were passed, for example.
